I was prepared to give this pub a fair go following all the changes and re-fit over that past year.
Unfortunately, all the changes have been negative.
The place used to have an atmosphere that was friendly and welcoming, and had certain quirks that set it apart from other pubs in the area, with a well established client base.
Now it has turned into another carbon copy 'sports bar' with very little in the way of charm, and has lost the friendly atmosphere, in favour of TV everywhere and concentrating on cheap booze.
I have visited a couple of times to listen to music, but unfortunately I have dropped this pub from any future Amblecote runs.
If I could sum up the problems I find with this pub now it would be as follows....
Bar staff - I find a couple of the staff to be efficient and helpful. But a couple of the others are slow, can't remember a couple of drinks for longer than a few seconds, get drinks wrong, and have no bar skills (serving whoever is in front of them, or friends, rather than working the bar correctly and understanding who has been waiting a long time), and don't get me started on how long it takes most of them to work the tills !!
Conservatory area - this has basically been turned into a pool room, removing one of the key features that was attractive about the pub. It was nice to sit in there on a hot summer's day, out of the direct sun and listen to live music outside. Impossible now as pool and darts dominate the room.
TV screen everywhere - Not very welcoming.
When bands are playing have the courtesy for turning the TV's off, or at least turn the volume down If you're sat in the main bar you've got live music playing in one ear and tedious sports commentary in the other ear from the TV's - annoying and discourteous to the artists playing.
This pub has pandered to sports and younger clientele. Unfortunately, this is ok while the pub is still fresh and new. But younger clientele are fickle and as soon as there is something new they'll desert the place in favour of pastures new. The pub has alienated so many of its old core customers, this may become a problem in the future.
On the last visit, the entrance hallway stunk of cannabis. Says a lot !! Seriously need to get that under control.
Update ........
Following my review and the managements response....
The 'smell wafting in from outside' must have been pretty pungent because it had managed to stick to the coats of a group standing at the bar.
As a final and ironic note :
It would appear I have been Facebook blocked from the pubs page.
Can't search for it, and where there would be links from bands, I just see text.
So much for " taking my comments on board" and "hope you might consider giving us another chance in the future"
Hilarious !!!
Says it all really.
